Children’s Theatre runs from June 24-September 6 and includes: Snow White, Peter Pan, Little Mermaid, Aladdin JR., Cinderella, Wizard of Oz

Staff applicants must have advanced educational or professional experience or be studying in a graduate program. (See “Internships” below for undergraduate or recently graduated applicants). Undergraduates are only considered for internships.

Surflight Theatre is a very fast paced resident full Summer Stock environment. Candidates should only apply if they love and excel at an exciting, busy, very rigorous, full schedule. Surflight is also a team oriented theatre and looks forward to welcoming you into our team family. While everyone is hired for a particular position and your skills will be fully utilized in that position. If another department is in need of support, anyone with availability will be swung into that department to assist as needed. Staff positions include salary and housing. Theatre and housing are one block from the beach.

  • Will serve as Production Stage Manager for all Children’s Theatre shows and mentor Stage Management interns and some High School age apprentices. Supports the Education Department shows, classes, cabarets, working closely with all departments of the theater from management, to cast and crew to volunteers to create a safe, efficient and positive work environment for the education programming. Excellent communication skills are required and candidates must be highly organized.

    Compensation: $550/wk. Housing if needed

    Dates: June 8 – Sep 7, 2026

    Duties will include:

    To act as PSM for the Education Department in the Children’s Theatre (adults performing for children), the youth production of Aladdin JR. and providing support to the AEA Production Stage Manager for Mainstage as able.

    • Maintaining show related paperwork including daily schedules, rehearsal and performance reports, run sheets, prop/cast tracking.

    • Running all rehearsals and techs according to a set schedule.

    • Assisting with all backstage run sheets for show run.

    • Setting up performance spaces and assisting in breakdown post show as needed.

    • Checking specific spaces and structures for cleanliness and safety.

    • Performing preset responsibilities with ASM interns including props preset and overseeing all backstage activity when in performance for Children’s Theatre.

    • Running fight calls, brush-up and understudy rehearsals as required for Children’s Theatre.

    • Responding to performer and staff injuries and first aid needs.

    • Other duties as assigned including production build assistance for Children’s Theatre shows.

    • May or may not run Mainstage shows backstage if needed.

  • Works directly with the Technical Director/Scenic Designer to execute the building and installation of all productions during the season. Applicants should be highly motivated with a strong background in scenic construction and must be proficient with hand and power tools, reading drafting, as well as basic scenic painting. Will also design the Children’s Theatre Shows and oversee Scenic Shop Interns. Please indicate any knowledge and experience with electrics or sound. Candidates must be able to lift at least 75 pounds and be comfortable working on ladders. May run shows if needed.

    Compensation: $650/wk. Shared housing if not local

  • Works directly with the Scenic Designer, Director and Technical Director to design and execute the building, pulling and sourcing of props for all Mainstage productions during the season. This position also supervises one Props Intern. Applicants should be highly motivated with a strong background  or experience in historical periods, crafting, set dressing,  DIY projects, painting, light carpentry, light sewing etc. 

    Props will support costumes in some specialty building if necessary. Surflight is a very team oriented theatre and individuals should be flexible, fun, enjoy a fast paced environment, take ownership of the product on the stage and can meet deadlines. 

    Compensation: $600/wk. Shared housing if not local

  • Works directly with the Sound Designer and Directors. Will maintain, sound equipment and mics. Prep mics before and after shows and assist in troubleshooting sound issues. Will design and build Children’s Theatre show sound. Strong knowledge of theatrical sound and live mixing required. Will mix sound during shows and oversee Sound intern on running Children’s Theatre shows. Will assist in other production departments as directed by the Technical Director.

    Compensation: $550/wk. Shared housing if not local

    Dates: May 12 – Sep 21, 2026 or later (some flexibility in dates available)

  • Works directly with Director and Design team to effect the vision of the show. Will design lighting for all Mainstage Musicals, serve as ME and run shows and direct the Electrics Intern. Must be a proficient electrician, programmer ETC Element and be able to program quickly and efficiently with significant preprogramming ability before tech begins. This position will also support and work in the shop whenever possible. Previous experience with large musicals necessary.

    Compensation: $650/wk. Housing if not local

    Dates: May 12 – Sept 7, 2026 or later (some flexibility available)

  • Works directly with the Education Director to coordinate all musical elements of the Children’s Theatre Productions, teaching, conducting and running tracks during performances. This position requires proficient piano improvisational skills as well as good accompaniment capabilities. The candidate may also have the opportunity to assist Music Director for Mainstage Productions as available.

    Compensation: $550/wk. Housing if needed

    Dates: Early June – Sep 7, 2026

  • Works directly with the Directors and other Designers to execute the vision of the show within budget, oversee shop schedule and pulling, building and fitting of all productions during the season. Applicants should be highly motivated and team oriented, with design experience and a strong background in costume construction and must be proficient with hand and machine sewing and alterations. Candidates must be able to lift at least 25 pounds. This position will design all Mainstage productions during the course of their contract and be hands on in the shop.

    Compensation: $650/wk. Single housing if needed

    Dates: May 12 – Sep 7, 2026 or later (some flexibility available)

  • Works directly with the Costume Designer to execute the pulling, building and fitting of all productions during the season. Applicants should be highly motivated and team oriented, with a strong background in costume construction (patterning, cutting, draping) and must be proficient with hand and machine sewing and alterations. Candidates must be able to lift at least 25 pounds. Wig and Millinery experience a plus.

    Compensation: $575/wk. Shared housing if needed

    Dates: May 12 – Sep 7, 2026 or later (some flexibility available)

    Duties will include:

    • Providing guidance on costume budget allocations.

    • Managing and scheduling the costume shop team’s hours.

    • Maintaining the shop inventory.

    • Working with the Costume Designer and Production Manager to manage show costume budgets.

  • Part-time, flexible shifts. Summer (mid-May-Labor Day), Fall and Holiday. Must be 18 or over to work in the box office.

    Our box office staff answer phones, take orders and answer questions; print ticket orders and are the “face & voice” of the theatre when patrons call or visit the theatre.

    Excellent people skills and patience needed. Typing, spelling and general computer skills important. No experience necessary with ticketing software-we will train. Knowledge of the surrounding areas is helpful.

Internships

Internships

Surflight has several paid internships available to end out our season as some of our interns return to their university programs. Open to anyone in college or just recently graduated this is a great way to get early career experience in the theatrical industry.

Arts Management - Assist in PR, House Management, Company Management etc.
Scenic Shop - Assist in builds and paint in scene shop
Stage Management - Assist in our Stage management department in rehearsals and running shows.
Costumes - Assist in the costume shop with builds and backstage wardrobe.
Internships are busy with lots of hands on experience. They do require evening and weekends.

Interns are undergraduates or recent graduates. All interns receive a weekly stipend and an extra stipend of $25/production for Children’s Theatre work, as well as free housing. All rooms are shared in a large group beach house.   

Internships are extremely “hands-on” with tremendous responsibility and require flexibility and humor within a rigorous summer stock schedule!  Ability to work long hours a plus!

Interns receive design/staff opportunities on Surflight Children’s Theatre productions. Terrific opportunity to work one-on-one with Designers and Staff as well as getting numerous large musicals and Children’s shows on your resume. 

All interns have the opportunity to crossover into other technical areas if they have interest in other disciplines. 

Applicants for internships should have basic knowledge in the area in which they are applying. Internships are learning opportunities and staff is expected to train interns in all assignments if necessary. Interns are undergraduates or recent graduates.

  • Supports the Stage Management team, working closely with the Production Stage Manager and Children’s Theatre Stage Manager on assigned Children’s Theatre shows. May call at least 1 Children’s Theatre production. Experience in running large musicals a plus.

    Duties will include:

  • Works directly with Lighting Designer to effect the vision of the show. The Lighting Intern will often run spotlight during a Mainstage show and sometimes the board. This position will also work closely with audio and work in the shop whenever possible as directed by the Technical Director. Good electrician with previous experience with large musicals necessary. The Lighting Intern will have Design responsibilities for Children’s Theatre shows and run the board for those shows.

    Compensation: $375/wk stipend. Shared housing if not local

    Dates: On or around May 25 – Aug 31, 2026 or later (some flexibility available if still in school)

  • This internship requires a strong piano player who is capable of accompanying, vocal coaching of children, teens and adults, some conducting. This intern will assist the Education Director in all youth musical theatre camps, Teen apprentice program, large Youth production of Aladdin JR. and may assist in vocal teaching of adults and some conducting of Children’s Theatre Performances (adults performing for children) or Mainstage Musicals. 

    Compensation: $375/wk stipend. Shared housing if not local

  • Works directly with the Audio Engineer and Sound Designer on all things related to sound. Will run shows either in sound or in another production department. Will also work closely with Electric Department and Scene Shop with responsibilities in those areas when available and as assigned by the Technical Director.

    Compensation: $375/wk stipend. Shared housing if not local.

    Dates: On or around May 25 - Aug 31, 2026 or later (some flexibility available if still in school)

  • Works directly with the Costume Shop Manager and Costume Designers to execute the building and fitting of all productions during the season. Applicants should be highly motivated and team oriented, with a background in costume construction and history and must be skilled with hand and machine (home) sewing, alterations, and following commercial patterns. Wigs and millinery are all assets, but are skills that will be taught as well. Candidates must be able to lift at least 25 pounds, will run shows as wardrobe and do show laundry and maintenance. Costume Interns will also have design responsibilities on some Children’s Theatre shows as assigned.

    Compensation: $375/wk stipend. Shared housing if not local

  • Works directly with the Props to execute the building and acquisition of all props during the season. Applicants should be highly motivated with a basic to good background in Props construction, scenic construction, basic painting, props buying and history. Must have some experience in or interest with using hand and power tools, as well as basic scenic painting. Candidates must be able to lift at least 50 pounds. Will run shows as needed and assist in props for Children’s Theatre.

    Compensation: $375/wk stipend. Shared housing if not local

  • Works directly with the ATD and Technical Director/Scenic Designer to execute the building and installation of all productions in the season. Applicants should be highly motivated with a background in scenic construction and must be at least semi-proficient with hand and power tools, reading drafting, as well as basic scenic painting. Please indicate any knowledge and experience with electrics or sound. Candidates must be able to lift at least 75 pounds and be comfortable working on ladders. Will be assigned to support other production departments as needed.

    Compensation: $375/wk stipend. Shared housing if not local.

    Dates: On or around May 25 – Aug 31, 2026 or later (some flexibility available if still in school)

  • Works directly with the General Manager, Box Office Manager and Company Manager to do work in all FOH areas. Will Assist in Education Department, House Management, Company Management, Box Office Reports, Royalty Reports, etc. Will also assist in Production work for Spongebob Musical, Youth Edition and education department as needed. This position is all encompassing and touches on all areas that are more administrative in the theatre.

  • The Education interns will assist with the education department in Camps, Children’s Theatre productions, Child wrangling, the large youth production, supervising/teaching high school age apprentices. They will also work in Arts Management. Those who are interested in further teaching and TYA are particularly suited for this position and skills in singing and or dance is preferred. 

    Compensation: $375/wk stipend. Shared housing if not local

  • Box office interns work in the Box Office with the part-time staff. Will work days the Box Office Manager is not in (typically Mondays). Box office is open 10am-15 minutes after the show goes up, 7 days/week. Interns will also share House Management duties with the Arts Management Interns.

Apprenticeships

Apprentice Program

Surflight Theatre’s Teen Apprentice Program is a flexible program for High School students going into 9th to 12th grades or 2026 graduates. Known as the 4, 4 and 4 program, it consists of a commitment of
4 hours a day, 4 days a week for 4 weeks.

More time can be spent at the theatre if interested.
In which case you will be assigned to run crew for Children’s Theatre:
Stage managing, running spotlight, assisting backstage on run crew, ushering, etc.
Apprentices who show promise may also have the opportunity for spotlight duties on Mainstage shows.

Elder teens who perform may be considered for an unpaid performing apprenticeship in a Mainstage production. Performing apprenticeships are offered by audition only.

This program is an opportunity to learn many theatre skills which are also life skills and can be used in many applications outside of theatre. Apprentices may work next to skilled professionals, college age interns and see first-hand how the business of theatre works.

Since Surflight is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Apprentice hours count as service hours for NHS and college applications.
